Rice husk is the hard outer shell left behind when paddy is milled. Burned slowly in a low-oxygen kiln it turns into sekam bakar — carbonized rice husk: a black, brittle, highly porous material that weighs almost nothing and takes years to break down. Growers use it to open up heavy soil, to lighten a potting mix without holding water the way peat does, and as a dry, absorbent bedding in poultry and livestock houses. Because carbonizing drives off the acids, it comes out alkaline at pH 8.5 to 9.5 and carries potassium and silica with it.
